EvaWUD: Καμπάνια για την Εξάλειψη της βίας κατά των γυναικών που παίρνουν ναρκωτικά.

Οι ΓYΝΑΙΚΕΣ της EuroNPUD Public (ευρωπαϊκού δικτύου ατόμων που παίρνουν ναρκωτικά) σε συνεργασία με την οργάνωση WHRIN (Women HarmReduction International) ενωθήκαμε και φέτος στην καμπάνια ευαισθητοποίησης κατά της βίας προς τις γυναίκες της κοινότητάς μας.

25 Νοεμβρίου, Παγκόσμια Ημέρα για την Εξάλειψη της Βίας κατά των Γυναικών, ξεκινάμε 16 ημέρες δράσης ως τις 10 Δεκεμβρίου, Παγκόσμια Ημέρα για τα Ανθρώπινα Δικαιώματα. 

Μέλος βεβαίως είναι και το Δίκτυο Ομότιμων Χρηστών .Ψυχοδ/κων ΟυσιώνPeerNUPS.

Φοράμε κάτι πορτοκαλί (χρώμα της καμπάνιας ΟΗΕ), οργανώνουμε δράσεις και δημοσιοποιούμε φωτογραφίες και πληροφορίες.

A Visit to the Drug Consumption Room in Athens-With the Eye of an Outsider #Drugreporter

 

 

 

12 χρόνια αφότου έκλεισε ο πρώτος, πιλοτικός τότε, χώρος χρήσης στην Αθήνα, άνοιξε αυτός ο εξαιρετικά μοντέρνος και φροντισμένος χώρος τον οποίο, κατά το τελευταίο συνέδριο  of experts της Correlation που συγκέντρωσε στην Αθήνα πολλούς ‘ειδικούς’ (δηλαδή εμάς τους,έμπειρους της χρήσης) ακτιβιστές, επισκεφθήκαμε με το Θανάση Θεοχάρη Πρόσεδρο του ΟΚΑΝΑ.

Ο Peter Sarozi του Drugreporter έκανε το μικρό αυτό ντοκιμαντέρ στο οποίο μιλάμε η γράφουσα, ο Μάριος Ατζέμης, η Λίτσα Λαγάκου, ο Πρόεδρος του ΟΚΑΝΑ Θανάσης Θεοχάρης, η Μαριανέλλα Κλώκα, θεραπευτές κι εργαζόμενοι στο χώρο καθώς και (σε ένα ενδεικτικό απόσπασμα από το χαιρετισμό στο οποίο μιλά μόνο για τον εαυτό του) ο Δήμαρχος Αθηναίων Κ. Μπακογιάννης.

At the international meeting of the Corelation European Harm Reduction Network, participants had a chance to visit the Drug Consumption room of OKANA, the largest service provider in Greece. The Drug consumption room started as a pilot project back in 2011, to reduce needle sharing and infections, to end overdoses and to reduce public nuisance caused by the open drug scenes in Athens. The room could only operate for 9 months as a pilot project, before the prosecutor shut it down. Athenians had to wait ten years, to be able to finally open it again.

Harm Reduction in Athens – With the Eye of an Outsider

Seven years after our last visit, we returned to Athens to film about harm reduction in Greece, with a special focus on the first drug consumption room. Read our article and watch the movie we produced!

When I arrived in Athens to attend the annual members’ meeting of the Correlation European Harm Reduction Network (C-EHRN), memories were flooding back from my previous visit to Athens. In 2015 made a film in the Greek capital about the first supervised injecting site, Odysseas, which was opened in 2013 to provide a safer and healthier environment for people who inject drugs.

Back in those days the situation was quite different. The site was suspended after a few months of operation due to “legal problems” – which really translated to a lack of political support. We were not even allowed to enter the closed site and there were obvious signs of distrust between decision makers and civil society.

This time, seven years later, I was pleasantly surprised by what I have experienced in Athens. Not that the situation on the streets looks better: wherever you go in the city centre, you see homeless people, living in poverty, trying to ease the suffering of their everyday struggle for survival on the streets with different kinds of substances. There are open drug scenes with shocking sights of abandoned, marginalised people. The consequences of decades of austerity politics will not disappear anytime soon.  

However, meeting with local officials and civil society representatives was uplifting. It seems that the current political leadership, both in the city and the national level, is more competent and committed than it was seven years ago. And the COVID epidemic, with all its devastating effects, had its upsides as well: it provided an opportunity to revise some outdated policies and bring some innovation into the drug care system.

The drug consumption room (DCR) is now open and working, serving the most marginalised people by creating an island of security, health, and humanity in the often hostile jungle of urban street life. We could visit and film the site. I have been to many similar sites from Canada to Germany – but this was not only the easternmost of those, it was also one of the best equipped.

The whole DCR had the impression that everything is brand new. Clients can use both the injection room and a smoking room – a welcome choice considering that apart from heroin users, Athens has a growing population of methamphetamine users (the locals call it shisha). There are comfortable chill-out rooms, cosy spaces for people to eat and wash themselves and their clothes. Some of the rules seemed too rigid: for example opioid agonist therapy (OAT) clients cannot use the site due to some bureaucratic nonsense. Well, nothing is perfect – but it is a very promising start!  

What is more, not far from the DCR, there is a shelter for people who use drugs – a six-story building with showers, dining rooms, meeting rooms, and separate sleeping quarters for male and female drug users (max. 90 persons), as well as a unit for women with kids. Loss of housing is always one of the key underlying social problems that fuels and escalates drug dependence, overdoses, and infections. By giving people a place to sleep we do as much harm reduction as with giving out sterile needles. Athens mayor, Kostas Bakoyannis, who personally opened the C-EHRN meeting, said scaling up access to harm reduction in the city is one of the main achievements he can be proud of.

The Greek drug system is based on a unique model with OKANA, a state-funded organisation, as the largest service provider in the country. OKANA provides the whole spectrum of care, from prevention to treatment, harm reduction, and social rehabilitation. This integrated model has its obvious benefits. For example, for clients it is easier to navigate through the system and be referred to the service they need. Athanasios Theocharis, the head of OKANA, was proud to report that they significantly increased the number of clean syringes distributed and improved access to OAT. He is a committed and competent public official who has a vision to involve the most affected communities in implementing and monitoring interventions.

Of course the community itself has a lot of complaints and criticisms when it comes to the actual situation. Luckily Greece has a vibrant community with excellent activists, such as Marios Atzemis, Christos Anastasiou, and Daphne Cronopoulou. They say the high number of overdose deaths is concerning, access to naloxone is limited and one DCR is far from enough to serve the whole population who need harm reduction (OKANA is planning to create new mobile services in the near future). They experience a lot of stigma and discrimination, not only from the general public, but also from health and social professionals. Who often still have a paternalistic approach when it comes to people who use drugs: they don’t treat them as equal citizens but as problems to be fixed.

And of course there is the notoriously brutal Greek police. There are reports of beatings and torture of people who use drugs. They demand decriminalisation. Mr. Theocharis agrees: he claimed that they have initiated a dialogue about decriminalisation with the Ministry of Justice.  

I came back from Athens with the firm impression that change is possible – what is needed is the powerful mix of competent officials, a strong civil society/community, and decision makers who listen to both and are ready to provide sustainable funding.

Καταραμένη!

                

                Πιστεύετε στις κατάρες; Τη γκαντεμιά;

Ναι, ναι, ούτε κι εγώ.. Ακούστε λοιπόν και πείτε μου.

        Είχαμε ένα συνέδριο στην Αθήνα που κάθε χρόνο κάπου γίνεται και το είχαμε τιμή και έγνοια να το φροντίσουμε που θα γινόταν στον τόπο μας. Σκοτώθηκε να προετοιμάζει ο συνεργάτης μου, ήρθα κι εγώ απ’ τη Μύκονο στην Αθήνα εγκαίρως κι όλα καλά -παρά την αφραγκία και το να βάζουμε (ως συνήθως) από δικά μας για τα ακτιβιστικά.

Έρχομαι λοιπόν και πρώτη μέρα κολλάω ένα φρικτό ιό με βήχα-πονοκέφαλο-πυρετό, της κατηγορίας «δεν είναι covid, έκανα τεστ κι είμαι εμβολιασμένη». Ανησύχησε ο συνεργάτης μου και τον διαβεβαίωνα πως δε θα τον άφηνα ακόμα κι αν με πήγαιναν στο φέρετρο. Και… σχεδόν έτσι έγινε.

Φεύγοντας από το διαμέρισμά μου στην Αθήνα το πρώτο πρωί άκουσα κάποιον να φωνάζει ‘ΔΕΗΗΗΗ’. Δεν έδωσα σημασία παρότι κάτι υποψιάστηκα όταν ξαφνικά έσβησαν τα φώτα καθώς κλείδωνα την εξώπορτα. 

Είχα πυρετό, μα έφτασα στο συνεδριακό χώρο με μικρή καθυστέρηση. Κι όλα καλά. Για λίγο.

Μέχρι το μεσημέρι- 2^η γκαντεμιά, ο συνεργάτης μου που είχε σκοτωθεί να οργανώνει, έπεσε ετοιμοθάνατος με πέτρα στο νεφρό. Τι πέτρα- κοτρόνα δηλαδή.

Ευτυχώς μου είχαν δωμάτιο στο ξενοδοχείο  (σας το ‘χω πει πως είμαι η εκλεγμένη Πρόεδρος των Ευρωπαίων πρεζάκηδων- κι ως επικεφαλής όλων των οργανώσεων χρηστών είχα δωμάτιο να ξεκουράζομαι, το οποίο σκόπευα να χρησιμοποιήσουμε με τον εδώ Επικεφαλής του Δικτύου Χρηστών ως γραφείο μας. Εκεί ξάπλωσε για λίγο και – δεν τον έχω ξαναδεί να πονά έτσι, κατέληξε στο νοσοκομείο με συνέπεια, (μαζί με την τρελή μου έγνοια για το συνεργάτη και φίλο μου  κι άνθρωπό μου έξι χρόνια που μαζί στήνουμε το πρώτο και μόνο στη χώρα σύλλογο ανθρώπων που μιλούν ανοιχτά για τη χρήση παράνομων ουσιών) να πέφτει σ' εμένα να καλύψω και τις δικές του ομιλίες- απροετοίμαστη βεβαίως, που σημαίνει έξτρα δουλειά και άγχος.

Βράδυ της πρώτης ημέρας (με πυρετό λόγω του ιού που λέγαμε) και με το συνεργάτη μου στο νοσοκομείο συνειδητοποιώ ότι είχαν κόψει το ηλεκτρικό στο διαμέρισμά μου. Ουφ είπα, καλή στιγμή έπεσε η γκαντεμιά: είχα όλη την εβδομάδα δωμάτιο στο ξενοδοχείο.

Πλήρωσα λοιπόν- μα … είπαμε, όταν πάνε στραβά τα πράγματα κάνουμε βλακείες: 1. Δεν είχα λογαριασμό οπότε νομίζοντας πως κερδίζω χρόνο έβαλα αμέσως €400 πληρώνοντας από την τράπεζα και την επομένη, Τρίτη, αφού μίλησα με τη ΔΕΗ κι έμαθα τι ποσό χρωστούσα, κατέθεσα ηλεκτρονικά τα υπόλοιπα €235.

Από Τρίτη και για μια βδομάδα μιλούσα καθημερινά με τη ΔΕΗ (στα διαλείμματα του συνεδρίου, την ώρα που άλλοι έτρωγαν ή έπαιρναν μια ανάσα) εγώ ήμουν στο «περιμένετε στο ακουστικό σας»  ή σε επικοινωνία με εργαζόμενους της ΔΕΗ που όταν τους υπαγορεύεις το email σου και λες το ‘.com’ εκείνοι πληκτρολογούν  «ντοτ κομ» κι επιμένουν να γράφουν το daphne ‘dafni’παρά τις εηγήσεις τύπου ‘d dελφοί/ α αυγό / pπιπί/ h ήτα όπως Ήρα…’/

Βλέπετε έχοντας βλακωδώς πληρώσει ηλεκτρονικά από την τράπεζά μου όπως κάνω πάντα έπρεπε να περιμένουμε τις ‘δύο εργάσιμες’ να ‘φανεί στο σύστημα και μου ζητούσαν από τη ΔΕΗ να στείλω απόδειξη πληρωμής με email.

Εν τω μεταξύ ο  πυρετός και το συνάχι μου χειροτέρευαν, το ξενοδοχείο είχε το χειρότερο φαγητό που έχω συναντήσει εδώ και χρόνια με αποτέλεσμα να έχουμε και στομαχικές διαταραχές (κι όχι μόνο εγώ) , ενώ, για να πάρω κάποια ρούχα και καλλυντικά από το σπίτι μου  η απόσταση Στήλες Ολυμπίου Διός- Λεωφόρος Αλεξάνδρας έπαιρναν 45’ με ταξί (και €15).

2^η μέρα συνεδρίου μαθαίνω το θάνατο της αγαπημένης μου Έλνας Κλεώπα.

Η Έλνα, μια πανέξυπνη και διασκεδαστικότατη αντιστασιακή που είχε απολυθεί επί χούντας κι αργότερα με τον Κούνδουρο άνοιξαν το ‘Βρούτο’ στου Στρέφη, ήταν οικογενειακή φίλη, του πατέρα μου ως τα τελευταία του, ενώ είχε σχέση μέχρι το θάνατό του με το συνέταιρό του το σκηνοθέτη Ηρακλή Παπαδάκη κι ήταν μητέρα του Γιώργου Παπακωνστατίνου, υπουργού οικονομικών της κρίσης επί  Γ. Παπανδρέου (β’) . Πολύ αγαπημένος άνθρωπος με την οποία πρόσφατα είχα μιλήσει κι ο θάνατός της αν και αναμενόμενος με ξάφνιασε και με σόκαρε.

 

Εν τω μεταξύ το συνέδριο πήγαινε καταπληκτικά καλά μα εγώ υπέφερα με συνεχή δέκατα και αγωνία για το συνεργάτη μου που στο τηλέφωνο η φωνή του ακουγόταν να βγαίνει από τα τάρταρα.

Και σπίτι ακόμα χωρίς ηλεκτρικό που σημαίνει ότι αντί να ανασάνω στα διαλείμματα για καφέ εγώ μιλούσα με τη ΔΕΗ ή το ‘δεδυε’  στο οποίο που μοιάζει να νοιάζονται μόνο να σε γράψουν πελάτη αν είσαι γραμμένος αλλού ( η αλήθεια να λέγεται όμως: εκτός μιας αγενέστατης όλοι ακόμα κι οι ανεπαρκείς ήταν ευγενέστατοι κι έχω μια κυρία που πραγματικά η γλυκειά φωνή της ενδείκνυται για τηλέφωνο ενώ ήταν από τους λίγους συναδέλφους της που καταλάβαινε πώς να χειριαστεί ηλεκτρονικό υπολογιστή και δεν τα έριχνε στο «σύστημα» που  « πέφτει» κατά τους άλλους που πληκτρολογούν το «ντοτκόμ».

 

Παράλληλα, δε θα σας κουράσω με λεπτομέρειες. Έμαθα ότι τράκαραν το αυτοκίνητό μου στη Μύκονο και, εκτός που πρέπει να πληρώσω τον τοίχο στον οποίο έπεσε, δεν έχω πλέον αυτοκίνητο.  Και οφείλω και ευχέλαια και Δόξα σοι ο θεός που δε χτύπησαν άνθρωπο ή γατάκι- σκυλάκι και που ο Κύριος Kastell ζει και βασιλεύει.

 

Σ αυτή την ατμόσφαιρα (κι ο πυρετός συνεχίζεται ενώ το συνάχι έγινε βήχας) αρχίσουν τα τηλέφωνα πως πέθανε η  Ελένη, πρώην γυναίκα του πατέρα μου, με τη οποία ηλικιακά είμαστε κοντά, κι ήταν με τον πατέρα μου από όταν ήμασταν πολύ νέες οπότε μαζί μεγαλώσαμε και την αγαπώ σαν αδελφή. 

Κάποιες ιστοσελίδες είχαν κάνει λάθος- επρόκειτο για την επίσης αγαπημένη Μαρία Κοκκίνου (παντρεμένη με τον αδελφό της Ελένης  Ανδρέα Κούρκουλα). Η Μαρία ήταν ένας ξεχωριστός άνθρωπος που, για όσους τη γνωρίζαμε πέρα από σπουδαία αρχιτέκτων και πανέμορφη γυναίκα ξεχώριζε για τη λεπτότητα, τη διακριτικότητα την ποιότητα του χαρακτήρα της. Χρόνια και χρόνια της ζωής μου κι εκείνη, μάρτυρας ότι κι όσων ζήσαμε κι- ευτυχώς- μαζί με τον Ανδρέα- άφησαν το χνάρι τους στο εξοχικό πέτρινο σπίτι στην Αχαΐα που είχαν εκμοντερνίσει και το μοιράζομαι με πολλή αγάπη  με τις αδελφές μου.

 

ΚΙ η εβδομάδα έφτανε στο τέλος της: 

Το συνέδριο έφτασε στο τέλος του, ο συνεργάτης μου που το είχε στην καρδιά του το έχασε, ο πυρετός κι ο βήχας μου συνεχιζόταν, ο απολογισμός ήταν 2 θάνατοι κι ένα αυτοκίνητο παλιοσίδερα, ενώ εγώ με τα μπογαλάκια μου, από Σάββατο πρωί που έπρεπε να φύγω από το ξενοδοχείο, ήμουν στο δρόμο.

 

Bag woman αισθανόμουν- μα συγκινήθηκα που και η αδελφή μου μα και μια φίλη παιδική μου πρόσφεραν στέγη. Η Μαρία Χαρτο- μου άνοιξε το σπίτι και την αγκαλιά της και με φιλοξένησε στη γειτονιά που μεγάλωσα δίχως να νιώσω λεπτό βάρος και πάντα θα την ευγνωμονώ, όπως και την αδελφή μου που προσφέρθηκε να με στεγάσει.

Αντίθετα, μέσα σ όλη μου τη δυστυχία βρήκε ευκαιρία φίλος από τον οποίο άλλα περίμενα, να μου βγάλει λογύδριο «σκληρής αγάπης» ωρυόμενος μεθυσμένος κατηγορίες απ’ αυτές  με τις οποίες αυτομαστιγωνόμαστε σε βασανιστικές νύχτες αϋπνίας μα από τους ανθρώπους που (νομίζαμε πως) μάς αγαπούν άλλα περιμένουμε.

Βάλτε λοιπόν στον απολογισμό και μείον ένα καλό φίλο διότι για κάτι τέτοια μ΄’ εμένα οι γραπτές – sms- συγγνώμες δε μετρούν και θα μου πάρει χρόνια να το ξεπεράσω, διότι δεν ξεπερνιέται το  να δεις πόσο φρικτή σε θεωρεί κάποιος που εσύ νόμιζες πως σε θαυμάζει. Κι από τους φίλους μου αυτό ζητάω: κατανόηση και θαυμασμό– την επικριτικότητα και το μαστίγωμα τα κάνω και μόνη μου.

Και φτάνουμε Σαββατοκύριακο λοιπόν, ακόμα άρρωστος ο συνεργάτης μου, η μύτη μου ακόμα τρέχει κι έρχεται κι άλλος θάνατος: Η Κατερίνα Ιατροπούλου, μια σπουδαία γυναίκα που πλάι στα πολιτικά της στάθηκε πλάι στους χρήστες ουσιών όσο λίγοι στον τόπο μας.

 

Πείτε μου τώρα, μετά από αυτά-

Θανάτους, αυτοκίνητα, υγεία, φιλίες στην πυρά και να μένεις άστεγη (αν και προσωρινά) μέσα σε 7 μέρες,

τι λέτε;

Πόσες συμπτώσεις χρειάζονται για να πιστέψουμε στη μοίρα ή στις κατάρες; Και πόσο λέτε ότι κρατά τούτη η γκαντεμιά;

Καλού κακού πάντως συστήνω να με αποφύγετε- δεν ξέρουμε, μπορεί να είναι και κολλητικό.

ΕΙΚΟΝΕΣ

Ο πατέρας μου κι  Ηρακλής Παπαδάκης συνέταιρος  και φίλος του στη Μύκονο ένα καλοκαίρι πριν χρόνια πολλά που ήρθαν έρθει με την Έλνα Κλεώπα. Στην Παράγκα η Έλνα είχε μπλαβίσει μαζεύοντάς μας αχινούς.

Harm Reduction in Athens – With the Eye of an Outsider

Seven years after our last visit, we returned to Athens to film about harm reduction in Greece, with a special focus on the first drug consumption room. Read our article and watch the movie we produced!

When I arrived in Athens to attend the annual members’ meeting of the Correlation European Harm Reduction Network (C-EHRN), memories were flooding back from my previous visit to Athens. In 2015 made a film in the Greek capital about the first supervised injecting site, Odysseas, which was opened in 2013 to provide a safer and healthier environment for people who inject drugs.

Back in those days the situation was quite different. The site was suspended after a few months of operation due to “legal problems” – which really translated to a lack of political support. We were not even allowed to enter the closed site and there were obvious signs of distrust between decision makers and civil society.

This time, seven years later, I was pleasantly surprised by what I have experienced in Athens. Not that the situation on the streets looks better: wherever you go in the city centre, you see homeless people, living in poverty, trying to ease the suffering of their everyday struggle for survival on the streets with different kinds of substances. There are open drug scenes with shocking sights of abandoned, marginalised people. The consequences of decades of austerity politics will not disappear anytime soon.  

However, meeting with local officials and civil society representatives was uplifting. It seems that the current political leadership, both in the city and the national level, is more competent and committed than it was seven years ago. And the COVID epidemic, with all its devastating effects, had its upsides as well: it provided an opportunity to revise some outdated policies and bring some innovation into the drug care system.

The drug consumption room (DCR) is now open and working, serving the most marginalised people by creating an island of security, health, and humanity in the often hostile jungle of urban street life. We could visit and film the site. I have been to many similar sites from Canada to Germany – but this was not only the easternmost of those, it was also one of the best equipped.

The whole DCR had the impression that everything is brand new. Clients can use both the injection room and a smoking room – a welcome choice considering that apart from heroin users, Athens has a growing population of methamphetamine users (the locals call it shisha). There are comfortable chill-out rooms, cosy spaces for people to eat and wash themselves and their clothes. Some of the rules seemed too rigid: for example opioid agonist therapy (OAT) clients cannot use the site due to some bureaucratic nonsense. Well, nothing is perfect – but it is a very promising start!  

What is more, not far from the DCR, there is a shelter for people who use drugs – a six-story building with showers, dining rooms, meeting rooms, and separate sleeping quarters for male and female drug users (max. 90 persons), as well as a unit for women with kids. Loss of housing is always one of the key underlying social problems that fuels and escalates drug dependence, overdoses, and infections. By giving people a place to sleep we do as much harm reduction as with giving out sterile needles. Athens mayor, Kostas Bakoyannis, who personally opened the C-EHRN meeting, said scaling up access to harm reduction in the city is one of the main achievements he can be proud of.

The Greek drug system is based on a unique model with OKANA, a state-funded organisation, as the largest service provider in the country. OKANA provides the whole spectrum of care, from prevention to treatment, harm reduction, and social rehabilitation. This integrated model has its obvious benefits. For example, for clients it is easier to navigate through the system and be referred to the service they need. Athanasios Theocharis, the head of OKANA, was proud to report that they significantly increased the number of clean syringes distributed and improved access to OAT. He is a committed and competent public official who has a vision to involve the most affected communities in implementing and monitoring interventions.

Of course the community itself has a lot of complaints and criticisms when it comes to the actual situation. Luckily Greece has a vibrant community with excellent activists, such as Marios Atzemis, Christos Anastasiou, and Daphne Cronopoulou. They say the high number of overdose deaths is concerning, access to naloxone is limited and one DCR is far from enough to serve the whole population who need harm reduction (OKANA is planning to create new mobile services in the near future). They experience a lot of stigma and discrimination, not only from the general public, but also from health and social professionals. Who often still have a paternalistic approach when it comes to people who use drugs: they don’t treat them as equal citizens but as problems to be fixed.

And of course there is the notoriously brutal Greek police. There are reports of beatings and torture of people who use drugs. They demand decriminalisation. Mr. Theocharis agrees: he claimed that they have initiated a dialogue about decriminalisation with the Ministry of Justice.  

I came back from Athens with the firm impression that change is possible – what is needed is the powerful mix of competent officials, a strong civil society/community, and decision makers who listen to both and are ready to provide sustainable funding.
