The resurgent #WarOnDrugs logic: Impacts on human rights and international cooperation - #CND69

The #WarOnDrugs has caused decades of harm — yet similar approaches are re-emerging today. What is needed to transform drug policies towards health, human rights and evidence?

At the 69th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), this side event examines the resurgence of “war on drugs” approaches and their impact on human rights and international cooperation. As governments increasingly turn to militarised responses, counter-terrorism frameworks, and states of emergency to address drug trafficking, this discussion highlights the risks these strategies pose to human rights, multilateralism, and effective drug policy, and calls for responses grounded in public health, human rights, and international law. Speakers: Ben Saul – UN Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights John Walsh – Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) Macarena Fernández Hoffman – Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS) Gerardo Álvarez – Mexico Unido Contra la Delincuencia (MUCD) Moderator: Ann Fordham – International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC) Organised by Amnesty International and co-sponsored by Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS), Conectas, Dejusticia, Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC), and the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA).
